I'm involved in training medical students. For what I sometimes wonder in our truly dysfunctional health care system.

Caste kills. Fear of caste privilege loss is probably driving the deaths of despair, IMO. See Isabel Wilkerson "Caste" for an excellent analysis of this.

Toss ageism into the mix and you’ll see what coverage is like under Medicare - Medicare is not free BTW. It isn’t cheap to get the supplemental insurance for better coverage; people with less money get less healthcare or pay more for the care they do get.

Thanks for this piece, RJ. You might have given passing mention specifically to HR 1976, the Medicare for All Act of 2021. While far from perfect, it's a solid, decent start — and a majority of House Dems are co-signers. It's stalled in part because no one is promoting it, and the public's attention is constantly drawn elsewhere.

Every mention is important. Imagine if this single-payer universal healthcare legislation got as much attention in the media — if only in passing, drip-drip-drip — as climate change does. Instead we have Mob-like omertà, the code of silence. Out of sight, out of mind. Thanks for listening.
