We need to point out that the Balfour of the Balfour Declaration, the most key document leading to Palestine being given over for Zionist occupation, was an antisemite who didn't want any Jews in Britain or in Europe generally. Theodor Herzl, considered the founder of modern Zionism, was flexible about where his desired Jewish state would be located. Since it was Europe where the Jews had faced centuries of discrimination and worse, while Palestine was a model of mutual respect and cooperation among the three Abrahamic religion, it would have seemed logical that a homeland should have been carved out of Europe and provided protection rather than expelling the Palestinians who were mostly not antisemitic to establish the state of Israel.

Also, Balfour, and Lord Salisbury, were ardent Christian Zionists. Christian Zionism pre-dates political zionism by some four hundred years. and among those fanatics were The Puritans. We all know where they ended up, and the murder and mayhem that they brought - Salem Witch trials, anyone?

Only now am I beginning to see that the hyper-militarized State of Israel was fostered by others in order to make Jewish people into cannon fodder; to draw the hatred towards this extreme example and thereby away from a vast context of settler colonialism/ displacement of communities, extractive industries, forms of enslavement, and military/industrial complexes all around us.

The best thing Pope Francis could ever do is to make his stand in Bethlehem. He has an opportunity that is unequalled, to say "no" to genocide. He could even go to the West Bank, Beirut, or even Teheran, and say, “Not in our name, not on our watch.”
