"That belief doesn’t just undermine the political process (although it certainly does that). It also undermines trust in government itself, weakening the institutional bonds that help hold our society together.

That’s what makes this belief so dangerous. I only wish it was wrong."

Given that it isn't wrong, surely we should be grateful that this reality is being recognised. Imagine how we would feel if it wasn't.

Yes, it is essential that we name the corruption. For so long we did not.

Many acts considered obviously corrupt in most other nations have been simply legalized in the USA, including massive "untrackable" private funding of political candidates and the gazillions of gifts and donations linked to government contracts, subsidies and policies favorable to the donor. Not to mention the frothy stew of lobbyists surrounding Congress and the pipelines between public offices and corporate jobs and consultancies.
